When I double-click on the MPBD_win.exe I get a SmartScreen warning on Windows 10, what do I do?

Follow these steps to fix this issue (you'll need administrator previlages for these next steps):

1. Open the Control Panel and click "Security and Maintenance".
2. Click "Change Windows SmartScreen settings".
3. Click "Warn before running an unrecognized app..." radio button then click "OK".
4. Double-click the MPDB_win.exe and you'll see ths SmartScreen prompt, click the "More info" text.
5. Click the "Run anyway" button. You only have to do this once and Windows will remember that this app is allowed. If you like, you can reset the SmartScreen protection level back to "Get administrator approval before running...".

Is there a network version?

The standard version can be used as a network version (Windows only) by following these setps:
  • Put the MPDB.exe file on a publicly accessible network drive.
  • Have your users create a shortcut to the MPDB.exe on the network drive. They should put the shortcut in a folder on their local hard drive.
  • Right-click the shortcut and click the "properties" item.
  • Go to the "shortcut" tab and paste the local path (the full path to the directory where the shortcut is) in the "Start in:" box.
What files are installed, what changes are made during installation?

No installation is required. The files that are used by the program are listed below. No other changes are made to your system.

MPDB_win.exe or MPDB_linux (this name depends on the platform)
TempConverter.exe or TempConverter (this name depends on the platform)
README.html (program README)
License.pdf (license)
MPDB.ini (text file containing user preferences)
Working_with_User_Materials.pdf
Working_with_SOLIDWORKS.pdf
Working_with_ANSYS_Workbench.pdf
Working_with_Abaqus_CAE.pdf
Windows_10_SmartScreen.pdf
user_mats.txt (text file of user materials if created by user)
libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file

You might get the following error on certain Linux distributions when trying to launch MPDB_linux or MPDB_linux_demo:

        >error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

If you get this error, you need to install the following library:

        compat-libstdc++-33.

For Fedora Core, you would need to run the following command in superuser mode:

        yum install compat-libstdc++-33

        For a Debian based system, run the following command in superuser mode:

        apt-get install libstdc++5

For other distributions of Linux/Unix, please install the compat-libstdc++-33 library as recommended by your vendor.

What is the delivery time once an order is placed?

  • If you select the electronic delivery option delivery is usually the same day. You will receive a link by e-mail where you can download the application.
  • For CD-ROM orders the CD-ROM is shipped by first class or airmail within 2 days. You will also receive a link by e-mail for immediate download.
I clicked the option "write a text file" or "save plot to file", where does the file get written and what is it called?

You can set/change the directory for file and plot output in the "Options->Output..." menu item. The file name depends on the material and property that is being requested. For example for the linear expansion of Cr the data file would be called: "dl_l_Cr.txt" or "dl_l_Cr_plot.bmp". The full path and file name can be seen by holding the cursor over the checkbox labeled "write text file".
Is there a yearly license fee for the software?

No. There is only the one time charge. The pricing information is listed here.

Are references available for the data?

Yes. Complete references are given for all of the properties. The best way to see this is to download the demo version where all of the data for the elements are provided for free.

Can I add my data to the database?

Yes. This can be done in one of two ways.
  1. You can add your data yourself using the "User Material" function. This allows you to have the full functionality of the MPDB software and allows you to keep your data private. See the Working_with_User_Materials.pdf file.
  2. Or you can send us a copy of the data and we can add it to the database. However, you must also include a reference and the data will be available to all users of the software.

Slow program start-up on Windows

Program slow to start-up on Windows

If the program starts slowly on Windows you probably need to add an "Exclusion" in the "Virus & threat protection settings". Follow this path:

All Settings->Update & Security->Windows security->Virus & threat protection->Virus & threat protection setting (Manage settings).

Scroll down and you'll see "Exclusions", click on "Add or remove exclusions" and add the MPDB_win.exe to the list.

You need admin access for this.
